Christmas and New Year in Amalfi
During this period straddling the end of the old and the beginning of the new year, the crèche tradition, in some cases still set up with antique statues from the 17th and 18th centuries is repeated in every church and characteristic corner, and even in the fountains.
In Pogerola you can see a representation of a live crèche, while in Conca dei Marini those fond of the sea can take part in the suggestive underwater pilgrimage to the crèche in the Emerald Grotto.
Christmas Eve in Amalfi is a magic event, with the suggestive "descent of the star": a large kite made up of torches flies over Piazza Duomo and comes to rest at the entrance to the Cathedral. After midnight, a blaze of church bells and fireworks salute the birth of baby Jesus.
The entire period of Christmas Festivities is filled with events, art exhibitions, gastronomy shows, folklore spectacles and theatrical performances, which culminate in the New Year celebrations.
In Amalfi, New Year's Eve is celebrated in the square: the loud procession of folklore music groups begins at 11:30 p.m., culminating with enthralling fireworks in the sea at the strike of midnight. Celebrations go on until daybreak in the square with irresistible music, singing and dancing.
