The divided city

Bergamo (from berg-heim, city on the hill) is divided into two distinct halves connected by the two cable cars that have been running for over a century, a true rarity in Italy.

Bergamo is perfect for a one or two-day visit. It is well-serviced by convenient shuttles to the international Orio al Serio airport, one of Italy's largest low cost air terminals.

Film director Ermanno Olmi shot his film "The Tree of Wooden Clogs" (awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1978 Cannes film festival) in the Bergamo dialect, part of the Gallo-Italic language family.. The film was set in the Bergamo countryside providing the audience with a glimpse of Italian farm life.
