Cefalu, Italy

Cefalu, Italy

Cefalù is a charming fishing village with its back to an imposing rocky promontory that has always played a role in defending the city. When you arrive from Palermo, you are immediately fascinated by the powerful image of the Norman cathedral that emerges from the crowded medieval urban fabric.

Cefalù origins are Greek, as indicated by its ancient name Kephaloidion (chief, head), but its reached its maximum splendor during the Norman period, when it became the Bishop's See, a status that brought significant economic privileges. It was the residence of the Norman King Roger II, who began the construction of the cathedral in 1131.
