The Russian baths (Banja)
The Russians love to go to the banja, where they find relaxation and wellness and they can socialize. This is an important experience for a stay in St. Petersburg. The tradition of the banja has been known since the 16th century and even today the banja are located everywhere around the city. The parilka, the sauna, is the heart of the banja. At the entrance, visitors buy a venik, a bouquet of copper birch, to lash themselves in the parilka, in order to activate the blood circulation, and then they immerse themselves in a tub of cold water or take a wonderful cold shower.
Mariinsky Theatre
This theatre is the site of the most prestigious works and ballet of St. Petersburg and is one of the most important in the world. Dedicated to the wife of Alexander II, Maria, the theatre, corps de ballet and orchestra are also known as Kirov, a name assumed in the Soviet period. The theatre is enormous and the playbill of spectacles is always top notch; the orchestra and corps de ballet are among the best in the world. Here Baryshnikov, Nureyev and Natalia Makarova performed ballets; here the music of Cajkovsky, Mussorgsky, Prokofev, and Stravinsky was played; here was born the great choreography of Peter and the Wolf, Swan Lake, Bayadera, etc. Don’t miss the opportunity to see a ballet or hear a concert by the Kirov orchestra.
Opening of the bridges on the Neva
Every night from April to November, the bridges on the Neva are opened to allow large cargo and cruise ships to pass. The bridges remain open for several hours and their opening is a spectacle attended by citizens of Petersburg and tourists. At night, brightened by the light of dusk between May and June and crowned by the lights of the city, the large bridges open in succession as if in a triumphal parade. In conjunction with this, night tours are organized on tourist buses; reservations can be made at the hotel or at the tourist agency kiosks.
Russian Circus
This is one of the most famous circuses in the world. Of noble origins, it was founded by the Italian Gaetano Ciniselli, a confirmed circus fan who moved from Italy to St. Petersburg in 1869 to give life to one of the most beautiful circuses in all of Europe. The spectacles, today as then, are performed under the magnificent cupola (50 meters in diameter) of the circus palace ordered built by Ciniselli in 1876. The company numbers 150 artists including acrobats, animal tamers, clowns etc.
Russian folk show
Nikolaevsky Palace is the elegant and majestic setting of the Russian folk show, a spectacle of Russian choruses and dance groups. Despite being an ad hoc show for tourists, it is truly engaging and enjoyable, and able to express genuine traditions and the true Russian soul. Choruses and popular dances of various regions of Russia (especially Cossacks) succeed one another with ecstatic choreography and brightly-colored costumes.
