Saint Petersburg Events, Russia
The playbill of events in Saint Petersburg is always full, but especially in summer between May and July, when it is full of spectacles, festivals and celebrations.
The famous White Nights of Saint Petersburg, when the light of dusk invades the city giving it a magical and romantic aura, they are the surreal setting of the events that are performed along the Neva, in the city parks, the theatres, on the Palace plaza, along the prospect Nevsky and on the point of the Vasilevsky Island. From the end of May to the beginning of July, the light of the sun also illuminates the city at night because the sun descends only 6° below the line of the horizon and has its peak moment on June 21, on the day of the solstice in summer, when there are nearly 20 hours of light.
In this period fall the return of the Victory (9 May), of Anniversary of the city (May 27), and the Day of Russia (June 12). There are also different popular summer festivals such as the Festivals of Beer and Ice Cream, and the typical Kurjuška Festival that occurs in May. Kurjuška is the name of the fish that is caught in May in the Gulf of Finland; when it begins to be sold in the Petersburg fish shops, that means that summer has begun. Also at the time of the Carnival (February – March), there are festivals and entertainment in the streets and in the parks of the city, while kiosks offer blini (stuffed crepes), kvass (a rye-based drink) and apple juice.
The crowning moment of the events is certainly the Festival of the White Nights between May and July, which includes the Festival of the Star of the White Nights, with a full calendar of opera, ballet and theatre; the International Jazz Festival, featuring international artists, and the Viva Russian Cinema festival with films by emerging directors.
