Alphonse Mucha - Seduction, Modernity, and Utopia
From September 19, 2008 to January 18, 2009, the Caixa Forum in Barcelona will hold the city's first exhibition in honor of the famous artist Alphonse Mucha by the title, Seducción, modernidad y utopía (Seduction, Modernity, and Utopia).
Alphonse Mucha was one of the most renowned artists of his time, creator and disseminator of Art Nouveau, pioneering the use of art in advertising. His art inspires beauty. His works involve theatrical and allegorical elements, creating an atmosphere of mystery around his poetry, filled with symbolism. Alphonse Mucha set a trend and was one of the precursors of the phenomenon currently referred to as merchandising. In fact, his name comes from a bar of soap, something that would have been unthinkable before his time.
The show includes the most important elements of Alphonse Mucha's art, starting from four main themes: theatre, beauty, mystery, and modernity. The show also highlights four other main aspects that aid in the understanding of his masterpieces: the metropolis as a background, photography as means and art, the Slavic Epic and the diffusion of the "Mucha Style," followed by Madrid's and Barcelona's modernism.
