Prague Museums And Galleries, Czech Republic

National museum
Built at the end of the nineteenth century, the building was the symbol of rebirth of Czech nationalism. For this reason it is considered one of the most important museums in Prague, also due to its extraordinary architecture. The items on display are extremely valuable: spectacular collections of prehistoric findings, rocks, minerals and sections dedicated to paleontology, zoology and anthropology. The section that houses a collection of theater costumes from various eras is also of note.

National Technical Museum
A peerless museum in Europe, the most anyone who loves the history of industry and technology could ask for. Permanent exhibits include trains and locomotives, motorcycles, biplanes and antique cameras. Objects tied to astronomy and telecommunications are also on display. You can even visit a replica of a coal mine on the ground floor!

Mucha museum (Muchovo muzeum)

The works of the most famous Bohemian Art Nouveau artist are on display at the Kaunicky palace. Paintings, sculptures and drawings that marked an era comprise the more than 100 works that include the artist’s lithographs and memorabilia.

City of Prague Museum

The City of Prague Museum narrates the city’s history through paintings, sculptures and furnishings from the city’s churches and town halls. Antonin Langweil’s model is magnificent, with over 2,000 buildings in scale to let you see Prague as it was at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Bedrich Smetana Museum
Fervent nationalist and great composer, loved by the Czechs. This magnificent museum on the banks of the Vltava is dedicated to him. It houses the author’s manuscripts, portraits and personal items including the piano he played during his exile in Sweden.

Decorative Art Museum
Facing the Rudolfinum, seat of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, in the heart of the old city, this famous museum displays works and objects covering the long period from Medieval times to the last century. The most popular room is the one dedicated to the wonders of art nouveau and art deco: spectacular!

Lapidary

A true homage to sculpture, an area that preserves numerous stone Czech artwork from the eleventh to the nineteenth century. Also included are the original Baroque statues that adorned the Charles Bridge and the Krocin fountain, located in the Old Town Square until 1864.

Trade building

Fully renovated after the mid 70’s fire, this recently restored turn of the century building is now an extraordinary exhibition hall for the over 2,000 pieces of modern art from the National Gallery. It houses works by Rousseau, Picasso and Klimt as well as a splendid collection dedicated to modern Czech artists.

St. Agnes of Bohemia convent

A thirteenth century convent which, thanks to the renovations on the two adjacent churches (transformed into beautiful concert halls) and the brilliant reorganization of the cloisters (now an exhibit space for the Medieval works from the National Gallery), it has regained vitality and importance. The extraordinary collections, including paintings, altar pieces and statues of the Madonna, are often the works of anonymous artists.

Sternberg Palace
The seat of the National Gallery since 1949, it is one of Prague's most prominent art galleries. It includes a collection dedicated to the Fine Arts, unrivalled in Europe. Byzantine and Medieval artwork along with astonishing Renaissance bronzes make this exhibit extraordinary. The exhibit also includes Rudolph the second’s private collection, El Greco’s Christ and some of Rembrandt’s most celebrated paintings.

St. George’s Convent

Inside the Prague Castle, the convent houses works from the Bohemian Baroque art school dated between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It also includes some magnificent paintings from the Mannerist school followers who attended the court of Rudolph II.

Municipal Library

The library hosts valuable temporary exhibits. The entrance hall is adorned by a Monument to Culture composed of thousands of books glued together which, thanks to mirrors, create an extraordinary optical effect.

House At the Stone Bell
Noteworthy temporary exhibits are housed in an ancient eighth century building. Recent renovations have restored the brilliance of the original Gothic façade.

Old Town Hall
It houses commendable temporary exhibits in a fourteenth century palace with an extraordinary ogival arch gate – made by Matthias Rejsek – and infamous Astronomical Clock.
