Cannes History, France
The origins of this famous Côte d'Azur resort extend far back in time. In fact, they go as far back as the Neolithic civilization of the ancient Ligurians who were attracted by the beauty of the coastal area.
In the 10th century Cannes was just a village of fishermen and peasants at the foot of Mont Chevalier, on which the abbots of the monastery of Lérins built a wall to protect against the Saracen raiders.
As early as the 18th century, the area began to be developed by the French aristocracy for their summer holidays, but Cannes's real boom as a summer resort for the elite began in the 19th century. Without much nostalgia for the smog of London, the English Chancellor Lord Brougham built a private villa here and, in collaboration with the French government, began to promote this much beloved city.
In 1946, in the post-war period, Cannes was consecrated as one of the most prestigious destinations for the Hollywood stars who competed for the highly-desirable Palm d’Or at the International Film Festival, and it increasingly became the favorite vacation spot for famous personalities from all over the world.
