Chora, Greece
Chora is the capital of Amorgos. A charming village with white plastered housed framed by blue, red and green doors and shutters, cobblestone alleys wandering like a maze, Byzantine churches (40!), all drenched in a blinding light.
Of Medieval origin, with an inevitable Venetian castle (kastro) standing like a sentry over the town and its scattered windmills, Amorgos' Chora is something truly special. On a hill 400 meters over the sea, specifically chosen by the inhabitants of Amorgos in ancient times to escape pirate raids. Nowadays the town is filled with local taverns and porch-covered restaurants, some boarding houses and small shops.
