The Christ The Savior Russian-Orthodox Church , Italy
One of the city's landmarks, a witness to the presence of a Russian community in Sanremo...
During her stay in Sanremo in 1874, the tsarina Maria Aleksandrovna (who hosted many famous individuals, such as the writer Tolstoy) did not go unnoticed. Many members of the Russian noble class followed suit, making of Sanremo a mandatory stay during the rigid Russian winter months and to recover from illnesses such as tuberculosis.
Over time, a small community of Russians settled in Sanremo, purchased land at the end of that boulevard, later named boulevard of the empress, and commissioned the building of an orthodox church, facing, as required by tradition, west to Jerusalem.
