You can't visit Bergamo without stopping to try its pasta dishes, cheese, sweets and local wines.
It's impossible to find a menu without pasta dishes like casoncelli alla bergamasca, made of fresh pasta filled with meat..
Second courses almost always include polenta e osei or rabbit, typical of this Italian region, with local Bergamo cheese like Branzi, Strachinunt, Formai de Mut and Formaggelle.
The best local wines to accompany your meal are Valcalepio DOC (red, red reserves and white) and Moscato di Scanzo Passito DOC.
You can find the delicious and acclaimed Polentina e osei at Città Alta bakeries (from 2-3 €)! Not to be confused with the pasta dish, this is a pastry you can find at many restaurants, made of sponge cake covered in apricot cream and a layer of yellow marzipan decorated with chocolate birds.
Pick up a box of San Pellegrino and Clusone cookies as a sweet souvenir (at bakeries).
Another favorite sweet in Bergamo is the Torta del Donizetti, another homage to the city's illustrious citizen.
