Val Gardena Trekking, Italy
Walking
Those who love to walk will feel like they're in heaven in Val Gardena! In fact, dozens of paths through the woods to the magnificent mountain pastures and vast green lawns await them. Following are some itineraries worth your while.
If you're in Ortisei, try the path to Val d’Anna, just a thirty-minute walk that will thrill you. The path starts at the Seceda cableway station and follows the river to the caffè Val d’Anna. You can also follow the old train tracks which lead from the local church to Santa Cristina and Selva Gardena. Most of the 8 km long path is flat and sunny (Luis Trenker path).
From the local church you can also take the path that starts along the Sacun road for San Giacomo where you can admire the famous thirteenth century frescoed church. The return trip passed through Santa Cristina with a beautiful view of Sella and Sassolungo.
The Plesdinaz path along the road for Ulëta and the path to the Bellavista Inn start in Santa Cristina: The return trip runs along the old train tracks. We also suggest La Via Crucis - made up of 14 stations marked by sculptures by Gardenesi artists - and the Giro della Cascata, also enchanting in the winter.
From Selva, you can walk to Belvedere enjoying the spectacular landscape, one of the most fascinating in Val Gardena: start from the Ski Factory to reach the peak after a steep half-hour climb. Continue on to the Ciampac hut, in Vallunga. If you park your car at the mouth of Vallunga and continue towards the San Silvestro chapel, a pebble path leads to Pra da Rì, where the hut standing on the green lawn provides a place to rest just off the ‘Puez Odle' Nature Park.
'Puez Odle' nature park
More than 10,000 hectares large at an altitude of 2,500 meters, it is a natural resource including thick woods, spacious pastures and natural bridges that connect the natural cracks in the rock. In the mountain pasture, protected from any modern intrusion, the flora and fauna shine in all their rich varieties.
The park is located in the North-Eastern Dolomites. Mushroom, flower and fossil picking is prohibited in the park. Cars are also prohibited in this area which offers specific paths for mountain bikes.
To organize a guided tour, we suggest you ask for information at the Alpine Guide Offices.
Ferrate
Mountain climbers will find some of the Dolomite's most beautiful via ferrate in Val Gardena: from the easy Piz da Cir II – accessible from the Gardena Pass – to the Schuster or more demanding climbs on the Sella, all climbable with a guide, even for an enjoyable group excursion.
