Historic Routes, Italy
Excursions along the trenches of the First World War.
You can't miss the remnants of the long 1915 - 1918 war between the Italians and the Austrians. The entire area of Cortina preserves the tunnels, trenches, towers and military bases that now create a large open air museum.
4 museums are found within a radius of 5 km (Piccolo Lagazuoi, 5 Torri, Sasso di Stria and Forte Tre Sassi) and the paths are well-marked.
The mount Lagazuoi open-air museum especially covers the area of the lower Lagazuoi. Miles of tunnels were dug into the mountain, now open and marked each step of the way.
You can get there on foot from Passo Falzarego and Passo Val Parola or take the gondola lift that takes just 3 minutes to reach the peak.
Don't underestimate the hike since it climbs to about 2,800 meters above sea level.
Wear good hiking boots and a hat and don't forget your sun screen and flashlight. Climbing irons are not needed in this case.
You can also rent audio guides in Italian, German and English to get a better understanding of the dramatic war events.
From the top, the best paths are the sentiero degli alpini and the sentiero della Cengia Martini.
The 5 Torri open-air museum also offers a glimpse of the tunnels and trenches, recreating the daily lives of the soldiers with the items and weapons they used to defend themselves or attack their enemies.
From the Bai de Dones bar/restaurant you can climb to the Scoiattoli shelter on the fast chair lift.
Don't miss the sentiero delle trincee and giro delle 5 Torri with a view on the winged, low and middle trenches near the 5 Torri.Shelter
The First World War museum is housed in the Tre Sassi Fort.
It is easy to reach from Passo Falzarego and exhibits historic artifacts of high value (war remains, pictures, postcards, letters).
