Sacrario Militare Di Pocol, Italy
The Sacrario militare di Pocol, 1,535 meters above sea level, is just a few kilometers from Cortina and can be seen from the entire Ampezzana basin.
Designed by engineer Giovanni Raimondi, it is a square stone tower, about 50 meters high, built to commemorate known and unknown victims of the First World War.
To reach it you have to take the crowded SS47 Cortina- Falzarego and follow the directions.
To access the site you have to cross a chapel build by the alpine soldiers and the stairs inscribed with the names of the victims, their regiments and metals. More than 15,000 soldiers are commemorated, most Italian.
The view of Cortina is often blocked by the vegetation from here.
