Arena Of Verona, Italy
The temple of opera music was built in the 1st century A.C.
The Arena , together with Juliet's house, is the monument that makes Verona famous in Italy and all over the world.
Not hard to understand why. Thanks to its particular eliptical shape, the Arena has perfect acoustics, the perfect place where to hold great opera concerts. The opera season is Verona's main event, offering, every day during the summer, operas such as the Aida, Carmen, Turandot, the barber from Seville and Tosca. During the last few years it has diversified quite a bit, thanks to rock and pop concerts by national and internataional artists, attracted by one of the most beautiful natural scenarios in the world.
It is the third biggest Roman amphitheater after the Colosseum and the arena of Capua. The Arena of Verona was built using the typical stone from Valpolicella with all its shades of red and pink. The original triple order of layered arcs that surrounds it fell due to an earthquake in 1183. The inside portion remained intact during the centuries. It is made up of 72 double stone arcs.
The name Arena, means "sand", and comes from the sand placed on the floor of the amphitheater, that was used to absorb the blood of the fighters.
