Cannes Churches And Museums, France

Wandering around Cannes, you will see many interesting churches.

The 17th-century Church of Notre Dame d’Espérance, in a Provençal Gothic style, is located on Place de la Castre, surrounded by a wall.

The Orthodox Church of St.-Michel-Archange was built for the winter holidays of the wife of Czar Alexander III, evidence of the Russian aristocracies' preference for this city. The church, which has a beautiful blue dome, contains precious icons and religious objects.

The Bellini Chapel-Museum, in the park of the Villa Fiorentina, is a delightful little church in an Italian Baroque style. It currently exhibits the work of painter Emmanuel Bellini, who used it as his studio.

The Holy Trinity Church, on the other hand, is one of the 4 Anglican churches in Cannes.

Even the Musée de la Castre, in the castle of Cannes on the top of the hill in the old Suquet quarter, which was built by the abbots of Lerins to defend the port, is worth a visit, if only for the exceptional view. You can see ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman artifacts, works from the Pre-Columbian period and ancient Middle Eastern civilizations and indigenous art from Oceania, Africa and Asia, in addition to 19th-century Provençal painting. The 12th-century Chapel of Sainte Anne houses an exotic and precious collection of musical instruments from around the world.

The Musée de la Mer, in Fort Royal on Île Sainte-Marguerite, 1 km from Cannes, offers fascinating evidence of ancient civilizations and undersea archeological materials dating from the Roman period. Plus, in this fort, you can visit the cell that held the mysterious personage called "The Man in the Iron Mask", who inspired Alexandre Dumas to write his famous novel “The Vicomte de Bragelonne”. In addition, like other museums of the area, it periodically organizes engrossing activities and workshops for children, who might find Poseidon or Blue Beard here.

The Musée de Picasso is located in Antibes, in the enchanting setting of the Grimaldi Castle overlooking the sea, where the artist and companion and muse Françoise Gilot set-up his studio, decorating it with extraordinary works such as the fresco Les Clés d'Antibes and other famous paintings.
