Elba Island Eating And Drinking, Italy

Food and wine

On the island of Elba the food is served up by the sea! If you're a fish lover, you've found the right place, and your holidays will be rendered all the more delightful by the local cuisine, which can be described as simple and savory, masterfully combining fresh sea bass, bream and red snapper with seasonal vegetables.

Those who have already been to Elba can recall the Baccalà alla Riese, a triumph of garlic, onions, anchovies, parsley, chili peppers and black olives, or the Sburrita, yet another codfish or baccalà specialty, but here accompanied by fragrant catmint and traditional Tuscan homemade bread. On Elba, the flavors of the sea are apparent in every dish, but when the locals serve up boiled octopus , marinated Zerri fritti or stuffed sardines, you'll know you've made it to the very top of any dining experience here! All are simple yet incredibly flavorful dishes, incomparable in their preparation. Don't miss the excellent Gurguglione (vegetables only), rice with cuttlefish, and generally speaking any fish specialty, from swordfish to sea bass.

Any fine table must also include good wine: traditional Elba white and Elba red will accompany any dish, but try out the Moscato and Rosato as well, derived from ancient vineyards dating as far back as three thousand years ago.

Buon appetito!
